Since taking delivery of the climbing tower in July 2005, we have attended many fetes, shows, birthday parties and the odd ‘stag do’. We have, of course, also spent many evenings with our own Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers as well as those from other groups.
We have often been asked to allow Beavers to climb the tower but we feel that, if they do,
there is nothing for them to progress to in the other sections. We, therefore, allow them only to Boulder, which involves working their way around the lower section of the tower rather than climbing up it. As they are not harnessed or roped, we provide some substantial crash mats which we put around the bottom of the tower. The Beavers are assisted by helpers who walk below them to slow their descent if and when they decide to jump or fall off!
Cubs, Scouts and Explorers are allowed to climb and, of course, are harnessed and roped at all times. Crash mats are not used as they only reach the ground under the control of an instructor on the other end of the rope.
The instructor team are all trained to a high standard and also hold a First Aid qualification, which hopefully, should not be needed!
The popularity of the climbing tower and it’s team has increased as we are seen more and more out in the community at fetes, etc. This has resulted in an increased number of requests which require us to go further and further afield. In order to overcome this, we now have a flexible rule, whereby, we will not travel more than 10 miles from the Headquarters in Tilehurst.
We currently have a pool of some 20+ instructors. Due to the increase in demand we need more people to volunteer to help as this means less pressure on each individual to attend all bookings. The team is very friendly and the training can be carried out in a structured but relaxed way. All we ask is for you to help out when, and only if, it is convenient to you. So if you fancy helping the young people to learn something new and enjoy themselves, or If you would like some more information, then please click on the “Get In Touch” button on the right of your screen and fill in the details, we look forward to hearing from you.
