It’s that time of year when we look back at everything we have been up to as sections and as a group. This year we are doing things slightly differently in that we are holding it in the middle of a Beaver taster evening. This is where the children and their parents, who want to join the group are invited along so that they can get a taste of things to come and see if it is what they expect it to be or hopefully better! However this should not dissuade anyone else involved with the Scout group from coming along, on the contrary you will be most welcome. I am sure that new parents might enjoy getting the view of a parent who’s child has been with the group for a while!
The meeting will start from 6:30 pm on Tuesday 23rd September at the 79th Scout Group HQ on Armour Hill, Hopefully we will see you there.
… has been and gone this summer. 79th Reading Scouts hosted a group of American Girl Scouts from Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana and a fantastic time was had by all at this international camp in Windsor Great Park.
Plans are advancing rapidly and we have even more stalls and activities booked, very soon we will be asking parents for donations for the various stalls as well as help with manning them. There are a few spaces left so if you want to run a stall of your own please contact Kate as soon as you can, her number is further on in this article.
Planning is now well advanced for our popular annual Fun Day which this year will take place on Saturday 26th April. The gates open at 12.00 mid day and our intention is to continue until 14.30 but as anyone who has been to this event in previous years will tell you it is better to come early!
If last year is anything to go by we will be especially busy regardless of the weather, although it would be nice if it stayed dry for once! Currently we have plans for:
Climbing Wall Crazy golf Raffle Afternoon tea and Cake Stall Bar-B-Q Tombola Jam Jar Tombola
As well as the normal climbing we are looking for families to take part in a Sponsored Climb where we are hoping to climb the height of Scafell Pike! So if your family is up for the challenge speak to your section leader and start getting sponsored!
There is more space available though please get in touch with Kate to secure a place. This year we are also offering a special rate to other Scout groups, Guides, Brownies and local charities as we seek to involve even more people in our community. These stalls have to be pre booked and paid for in advance and are offered at a Special Rate of £8.00.
Details can be obtained by calling Kate on 07846 833681.
On a Recent outing the Chieftain scout Group took part in the Young Drivers Training Scheme on top of the Riverside Car Park at the Reading Oracle shopping center.
As you can see from the photo’s the weather left something to be desired but despite this the scouts all had a great time and also hopefully took their first steps towards becoming safer road users. They all agreed that it was great way to spend a rainy Sunday and has given them an insight into problems car drivers face so hopefully they can be safer on the roads and pavements themselves.
Despite the weather no Scouts, cars or car parks were damaged in the making of this event !
Many thanks to all the Leaders, Parents, Scouts and siblings who turned up last Saturday to help with the car boot sale. It carried on the tradition of busy car boots we have come to expect and hence why so many people come to them. We Raised an amazing £446.10 for the Group and the Chieftain Scout Troop raised £95 on their own stall which goes directly to that Scout Troop to help fund further adventures in their future.
We Also started to sell Raffle tickets for our Annual Fun Day which this year is on Saturday 26th April so make a note in your diaries. So far we know we will have the climbing wall and crazy golf as well as a host of other old favorites. However we are always on the look out for new ideas so if you have any or just want to help please talk to your section leader soon.
This Saturday 25th January is our next Car Boot sale and it is being run with the help of the Friday night Chieftain Troop. so if you have any donations for their stall please could you bring it down to the hall this Friday Evening.
It has been decided that our new Fund Raising campaign for 2014 will be to enable the refurbishment of our Kitchen. As a lot of parents will tell you the Kitchen is the heart of the home and the same can be said here at the 79th Scout Hall. It has been enthusiastically used by hundreds of children since the hall was built almost 25 years ago and frankly it is showing the strain! However it should be said that this is an ambitious target and we don’t expect to meet it quickly. So please feel free to contact us if you have any ideas or wish to help us with this important project, at the very least go and look at our coming events page to see how you can help us raise money and have fun doing so.
